Trauma and Dual DiagnosisAddressing Dual-Diagnosis | Co-occurring Disorders & Trauma
Most clients coming to treatment for substance abuse have some level of dual-diagnosis/co-occurring disorders, which many times includes some variation of trauma or PTSD. Some of the disorders commonly co-occurring with PTSD include: borderline personality behaviors, clinical depression, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD) and other anxiety disorders. In fact, many years of clinical research has shown that matters involving dual-diagnosis (also referred to as co-occurring disorders) are substantially more prevalent in addiction treatment clients than once thought.
Although crises that threaten the safety of the survivor or others must be addressed first, the best treatment results are achieved when both the disorder (i.e., PTSD, depression, anxiety, etc.) and the actual drug or alcohol addiction are treated together rather than one after the other. However, this is especially true for PTSD and other trauma related issues. At Lotus Place Recovery we combine treatment of both substance abuse and trauma to help clients work through the underlying issues that continue to negatively impact a their ability to maintain sobriety. Such is also the case in other dual-diagnosis matters, such as clinical depression, generalized anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder and a number of others.
